If you would like to commence your linguistic studies at Japan Seminar House, please fill out the application form and send it to admin@jsh.org.au.
We will use this information to place you in a suitable class. Please do not send any payment until classes are finalised. JSH reserves the right to cancel courses (due to insufficient enrollments etc.).

Basic Levels
Basic levels include the study of scripts (Hiragana, Katakana and 150 Kanji), phonetic rules, some daily expressions and basic sentence patterns. Whilst developing their speaking and listening skills, students are also introduced to the basics of Japanese grammar, required for the Japanese Language Proficiency Level 4. On average, it takes about 100 contact hours.
Intermediate Levels
Intermediate levels are designed for the JLPT 3 applicants or equivalent standard. Grammar includes passive and causative voices and modal expressions such as subjunctive and volitional. Students are given training in listening/reading comprehension and skills in social conversation, including honorific and informal. Vocabulary is increased to 2000 words and 500 Kanji.
Advanced Intermediate Levels
Advanced Intermediate levels require a minimum of JLPT 3 or equivalent and prepare students for JLPT 2. The curriculum focuses on the expansion of vocabulary to 6000 words and 1000 Kanji. Further modal and rhetorical expressions are added to represent the speaker’s own views and feelings in appropriate social occasions.
Advanced Levels
Advanced levels prepare students for JLPT 1. The reading course introduces Japanese literature appreciation and the listening course utilises Japanese movies and dramas. Students are encouraged to develop arguments in Japanese and develop a deeper understanding of Japanese language, culture and history.

Student Membership
Members are entitled to attend two classes per week or one private class per week in the period of their membership.

Private Lessons for children, VCE students, etc.
Private classes can be arranged. On average tuition sessions are 10 lessons for $440. (2 hours per lesson)
Teacher Training
Four theoretical units and one teaching practice unit. In Units 1-4, students learn how to teach Japanese grammar in contrast to English grammar. In the teaching practice unit, techniques for effective language teaching are taught through actual practice. Certificates are issued upon the successful completion of the course.
